I have also gone to different branches of the same bank(B of B) and never been successful in withdrawing more then R$1000 total. You make a good point about the weekly limit which can be imposed by some foreign banks.Again I am only familiar with the Bahia situation which may indeed be different then SP. Personally I am not comfortable walking out of most banks with large amounts of cash so I don't find the limit too bothersome.

That is the per day limit and you cannot get around it by multiple withdrawals however if you go into some banks such as Citi Bank you can have them open up the limit by calling your overseas bank and then you can withdraw unlimited amounts in one day. I know because I have done it. There are other limits which apply on weekends and certain hours of the day and night but that is up to the bank ATM you are using. IMO Wire transfers for small amounts can be a nightmare and expensive which makes the ATM quite attractive all around. In addition if you have a debit card based on certain banks or brokers they will refund the ATM fee up to a specified amount. My experience indicates B of B as the best exchange rate as well as being ubiquitous in Brasil in general. HSBC is also good but if you live in the sticks good luck on finding one of their ATM machines.
Sometimes the best man for the job IS a woman, which has proven true at this time in this country - IMO.

I like Dilma attacking the banks which rape the locals. I like her demand to push the Selic down so the Real falls to parity 2.70 to the dollar. No need to pay the highest interest rates in the world and have no funds for health, infrastructure, education and police. Just look at the Brazilians loading up on Miami real estate with the inflated Real. Sadly the debt service is so huge as is the pension payouts to the retired that the Gov has little money to spend on stimulus. So I bet we see continued push for lower interest rates to bring about a devaluation of the Real. The is the usual approach in Brazil and nothing has changed.
